Bone Density As We Age

Susan Baumgaertel · August 27, 2024

Have you had a bone fracture? Are you at increased risk for fracture? Do you want to learn more about osteoporosis diagnosis, prevention and treatment?

Especially in older women, a fracture can result in hospitalization and/or surgery, which can lead to diminished ADLs (activities of daily living) and QOL (quality of life)—and the subsequent downward spiral is not good.

“Bone Density As We Age” was a really fun, conversational podcast with Ashley Mak, PT, DPT, CSCS who runs a physical therapy service in Marin County, California called Patient Advocate Program. This is a novel, text-based physical therapy business that provides 24/7 text support for pain management and injury recovery.

Here’s the podcast rundown:

🦴  Why we should care about bone density (spoiler alert: for fracture risk reduction!)

🦴  Osteopenia, osteoporosis and how to measure

🦴  Bone density versus bone quality

🦴  Impact of menopause on bone density

🦴  Estrogen and direct impact on osteoclast activity

🦴  The long list of risk factors for osteoporosis

🦴  The long list of treatment options

🦴  Special consideration of nutrition, supplements and exercise

🦴  Key action steps to take to better understand individual bone health
