Mental Health & Menopause

Susan Baumgaertel · January 28, 2024

This is an important topic for many women (and men!) as they transition into midlife.

In my book The Menopause Menu, chapter 13 is devoted to mental health considerations of peri/menopause.

Here is the chapter introduction:

“This is a serious topic. Many people have had to cope with depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other mental health conditions long before perimenopause. The menopausal journey can be isolating, fatiguing, and unnerving, which can easily make things worse. Now is the time to connect with your physician, get support from family and friends, see a therapist, and accept medications if needed. Strengthen your support network and know that you are not alone.”

An original haiku comes right after the intro, from Susan S. Scott, PhD, psychotherapist, writer, and artist from Langley, Washington:

Tending menopause,
turn soil over with care.
Rain and Tears mingle.

Next in the chapter are MenoBits, bits of wisdom to glean from the main chapter content.

The accompanying recipe is Japanese-Style Fried Rice with Salmon, followed by mental health resources to put on your fridge door plus a bonus “neighborhood walk” to nourish your mental and emotional health.

Curious to read more? Hop on over to Amazon and get two copies: one for you and one to gift to someone who is going through menopause!
