Why my first book interview was with two men. 🎙️ (Part 2 of 4)
When you release a book about menopause, you expect to talk about estrogen and hot flashes. 🌡️
You definitely do not expect to kick off your very first podcast interview by discussing an 80-year-old woman accidentally taking Viagra. 💊
But that is exactly what happened when I sat down to introduce The Menopause Menu to the world three years ago.
It was August 2023, just a month before my book officially launched.
I joined hosts Eric Moore and Robert Klem on the Bedside Manner podcast, and it was my first time ever talking about the book on the air. Naturally, I assumed we would stick to the standard medical talking points.
Instead, the conversation took a brilliant, hilarious detour right out of the gate. 🔀
Before we even touched on my upcoming release, we were laughing about pharmacy mix-ups, muscle relaxers, and why the medical term “menopause” is completely inaccurate. As one of the hosts playfully pointed out, the word should probably be “meno-end” because the process definitely doesn’t just pause!
It was the perfect icebreaker.
However, beyond the humor and the funny stories, a truly beautiful connection happened during that recording. ✨
These two men were genuinely eager to understand the midlife transition.
They shared stories about fathers trying to connect with their families while their wives experienced intense hormonal changes. They asked vital questions about how to support their partners without making them feel isolated or misunderstood. 🏡
For so long, society has kept men completely in the dark about this natural phase of life. It was often treated as a hidden topic meant for women only.
Sitting across the digital microphone from Eric and Robert, we brought the conversation out into the open. 🌍
Having a woman talk to two men about midlife health is the ultimate way to break the stigma.
If you want to hear the full story about that pharmacy mix-up, and listen to our fantastic discussion on everything from a broken healthcare system to supporting the women you love, you can tune into my full episode of Bedside Manner right here. 🎧
As we continue celebrating the 3-year anniversary of The Menopause Menu this month, I am so grateful for unexpected, delightful firsts like this one. 🥂
Thank you for being part of this community.
To your health,
Susan
P.S. Next week for part three of our anniversary series, I’m taking you to a local farmers’ market and a regional bookstore. I will share the greatest takeaway I’ve had so far: the beautiful impact of helping women one-by-one. 🌻
