A Few Thoughts on Aging…

Susan Baumgaertel · April 16, 2024

Let’s face it…we are all getting older. Menopause sometimes emphasizes that point, whether we like it or not. Le Sigh!

Regardless, I strongly feel we all develop wisdom in midlife and beyond. Many of us need to do better at acknowledging that part though.

I recently posted a blurb on LinkedIn about aging. Here’s what I wrote.

Old boats = old bodies?

I was walking on one of the piers at Seattle’s Fishermen’s Terminal late the other day. The water was so calm and serene. Most boats were empty, and some almost looked abandoned. It really hit me that there was a distinct analogy between old boats and human aging.

⚓️  They still float. We persevere through illness and health, through the storms of life and the calm seas.

⚓️  They have a past. We have our own unique legacies, families, experiences, and history.

⚓️  They have many visible flaws. We have wrinkles, scars, and blemishes.

⚓️  They last a long time. We do too, if we are lucky.

⚓️  They require a lot of money and time to maintain. Don’t even get me started, hah!

⚓️  They all have names.

⚓️  Their owners love them. We humans need to do a better job of loving our aging bodies.

I’ve recently joined forces with Susan Vogler, DO, FACOG, MSCP in creating our new adventurous newsletter, The 2 Susans. Our aim is to talk about aging, midlife and—of course—women’s health. If you missed it you can catch our inaugural edition here.

Next edition coming out on May 1st: Thriving As We Age: Ease of Mind.

Please subscribe and share widely. Thank you!!
