Navigating guilt, exhaustion, and the hardest decisions we make for the people we love
It’s not often we get to go behind the scenes, but this is where Gina Anderson and I started our recent conversation on the Voices With Vigor show.
An intimate discussion about her caregiver role for her late mother…
Including the challenges that were painful to talk about:
🧩 Guilt — wondering if moving her mom into her own home was the right decision, watching her die on a mattress in her living room
🧩 Hard decisions — telling her mom she can no longer drive a car
🧩 Anger — knowing her mom hated her for focusing on safety and wellbeing
🧩 Resentment — realizing that hospice care was synonymous with her caring for her mom
🧩 Exhaustion — not sleeping for days on end while tending to her mom’s pain needs, giving her morphine every three hours round the clock
But that’s exactly what our conversation was about: keeping it real.
Gina and I spoke about how we all need more connection, not content. How we need to give the gift of presence. How we need to enlist the help of others who care about us to help us care for those whom we love.
What’s more, Gina was able to draw upon her skills in running a business, drawing parallels with providing for the safety and wellbeing of employees.

In the meantime, here’s a clip about telling your parent they are not safe to drive…
A discussion that is definitely not for the faint of heart!
