Nature Therapy Mini-Break

Susan Baumgaertel · August 13, 2021

No picture, just a story tonight.

I was out late watering in my backyard garden and patio area after dark, and since we are entering another heat wave here in Seattle, I did a little extra watering and lingered around some of our trees.

We have lots of pretty outdoor lighting with one particular light softly shining on a beautiful Japanese Stewartia tree. It was here that I spotted a very tiny spider making its web.

As I watched, transfixed by its movements and web-making skills, I saw a tiny gnat fly into the middle of the web, and then the spider became a bit distraught. It had to rush over, wind up the little gnat in a bundle, and then go back to where it was making the web and continue its process.

It was a very creative web, not perfectly aligned or symmetric like some spiderwebs, but I think the “early appetizer” made the spider a tad distracted. Regardless, it was so fascinating and mesmerizing to watch, I almost felt like I was intruding.

Serendipitous Nature Therapy at its best!
